CANDIDATE FORUM ON HUMAN SERVICE ISSUES
Tallahassee, FL - Candidates for the offices of Leon County Commission, Tallahassee City Commission,
Superintendent of Leon County Schools and the Florida House of Representatives (representing Leon
County) will participate in a forum Aug. 29 to address social services issues. The event is
co-sponsored by United Partners for Human Services (UPHS) and the United Way of the Big Bend from
5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Tallahassee City Commission chambers. The public is invited to attend.
Round table discussions with candidates will focus on issues such as access to affordable housing,
healthcare, child care services and education. "This is an important time in our community when we
elect our local government leaders, and we hope this event will help better inform citizens who are
concerned about community needs," said Kris Knab, UPHS Board Member and Chair of the Committee that
organized the event. "With so many competing needs and the limited government resources to support
them, we expect a good discussion about partnerships, funding and sustainability of services." Ken
Armstrong, President of the United Way of the Big Bend said, ""This forum is a terrific tool that
affords the candidates an opportunity to share their views while at the same time providing citizens
an opportunity to convey how important human care issues are in this community.
United Partners for Human Services is a coalition of non-profit human service providers and supporting
partners who work together to improve the human services delivery system in the Big Bend area. Its
focus is on strengthening the member organizations' effectiveness while providing a unified voice for
human service agencies in our community.
United Way of the Big Bend supports the work of its 43 certified agencies addressing areas of community
need in youth development, emergency services, physical health, children's services, senior services,
family support, services to the disabled, community support, and substance abuse. Additionally UWBB is
committed to improving lives all across the Big Bend area, to raising the level of attention to human
service, to mobilizing partners, and to looking at what issues best lend themselves to greater
prevention efforts."
