Girls and Boys Town Treatment Foster Parent Honored
with Points of Light Award
On Aug. 3, Florida Governor Jeb Bush recognized Laura Adams, a Girls and Boys Town Treatment
Foster Parent, with the Points of Light Award.
A certified foster parent and dedicated volunteer, Adams provides love and care to Florida's
severely at-risk youth.
"I am proud to honor Laura for the tremendous impact she has had on the lives of children and
families in her community," said Governor Bush. "By opening up her home she has provided not
only shelter, but care and guidance to children who need it most."
"Laura truly is a point of light for many of North Florida's children," said Ken Bender, Girls
and Boys Town of North Florida Executive Director. "Through the Girls and Boys Town program,
she is providing help, healing and hope to a new generation of young people."
Adams and her husband first opened their home to Girls and Boys Town foster children in 1998.
According to the Adams' it was an empty nest that led them to the though of becoming foster parents.
"We had all this space and comfort and we wanted to give hope to a child who might have lost hope
and to make a difference to them," said Laura.
The Adams' have fostered many children over the past eight years. They also adopted a young boy
whom they fostered years and he is now a very productive teen in the Tallahassee community. Adams
provides a safe and nurturing environment to any child who steps into her home.
"Laura is a committed mother, mentor, teacher and coach," said Bender. "She works with both foster
parents and biological parents to provide a warm and loving environment where children can learn and grow."
Through her involvement with Girls and Boys Town of North Florida, MAPP and the One Church One Child
program, Adams helps to educate the community on the need for foster parents. Adams also volunteers
each year with the Florida State Employees Charitable Campaign (FSECC) and is trained as a first responder,
volunteering to assist with medical emergencies in her workplace.
The Governor's Points of Light Award recognizes a Florida resident or organization that demonstrates
exemplary service to the community. Award recipients are announced weekly. A panel of judges comprised
of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to
the Governor. Volunteer Florida Foundation manages the program.
