Tallahassee Homeless Advocates Struggle With Reduced Budgets, Housing Shortage

Everything looks normal at the Hope Community, a five and a half acre plot that houses 120 of Tallahassee's homeless - 32 of whom are children - but beneath the surface, there is economic turbulence.

The recession is catching many of the nation's largest cities in the middle of pioneering 10-year plans to drastically reduce the number of chronically homeless by sweeping parks and alleys for men and women and channeling them into apartments with built-in case workers.

Second Annual Souper Sunday Benefit for Local Food Bank Draws Hungry, Generous Crowd

With every steaming hot bowl of soup, hungry residents were doing their part Sunday afternoon to get a full stomach and some much needed money for America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend.

The Second Annual Souper Sunday benefit at Railroad Square attracted more than 70 people within one hour of the event. It was spread throughout several shops and galleries in Railroad Square, and a $5 suggested donation gave full access to all of the soups. But soon, despite the rainy overcast, more soup cravers squeezed their way through the narrow walkways in search of more samples.

"Oh, it smells great in here," Linda Beckman said, as she walked in the room scented "Laine's Quick Vegetarian Black Bean Soup."

Bethel CDC breaks ground on south-side subdivision

Bethel Community Development Corp. broke ground Thursday for a new south-side subdivision on Ross Road.

Wellington Place will have 14 lots with 1,588-square-foot, single-family homes.

The CDC, an affiliate ministry of Bethel AME Church since 1995, previously has built 54 affordable homes in Tallahassee, according to Executive Director Darryl Jones. This is its first subdivision, though.

Walking for HIV/AIDS Awareness


This year marks the seventh time that Rosetta Efthim has participated in the Big Bend Cares AIDS Walk, which was held Sunday at Tom Brown Park. Three years ago she was interviewed at the walk and because of that article, a mother whose son had died of AIDS, contacted her.
